Getting Around New York City
Public and Alternative Transportation Options
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) operates one of the world’s largest transit systems, making it easy to move around NYC:
Subway and Buses
The subway runs 24/7 and is the fastest way to travel across boroughs. Buses cover routes the subway doesn’t and are convenient for short distances, although slower due to traffic. Purchase a MetroCard or use contactless payment. Apps like CityMapper or Google Maps are essential for planning your route.
Ferries
The NYC Ferry is a scenic alternative, connecting Manhattan with Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. The Staten Island Ferry is free and offers excellent views of the Statue of Liberty.
Biking and Walking
NYC is one of the most walkable cities in the world, and biking is increasingly popular. There are multiple bike-share programs, including CitiBike, available across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and parts of Queens. Many neighborhoods are best explored on foot to appreciate their character, local shops, and street life.
Ride-sharing
Uber, Lyft, and taxis are widely available. Ideal for airport trips or late-night travel.
Airport Transfers and Intercity Travel
Airports
NYC has three main airports:
John F. Kennedy (JFK): Located in Queens, JFK is the city's largest and busiest airport. It is best accessed via the AirTrain connected to subway lines A or E, or by yellow cab with a flat fare to Manhattan.
La Guardia (LGA): Located just northeast of Manhattan, LGA is the city's most convenient airport for quick access. It is served by local buses connecting to subway lines, and is easily reached by taxi or ride-share.
Newark (EWR): Situated in New Jersey, Newark is well connected to Manhattan via the AirTrain and NJ Transit to Penn Station. It’s also served by taxis and ride-shares.
Intercity Travel
Amtrak trains, the national passenger rail service, run from Penn Station to cities like Boston, Washington DC, and beyond. Buses (Greyhound, Megabus, FlixBus) are a budget-friendly alternative and depart from Midtown.
